Assume the X position. Extend both arms above your head diagonally forming a V shape. Spread feet a comfortable distance apart. 2 ½ feet depending on your height and leg length. Your legs and abdomen should form an upside-down Y shape.

Shift your body weight to your take off leg (front leg) and raise your trail leg (back leg). Place your front hand approximately 1 – 2 feet away from your take off foot. Focus, or spot your front hand while performing this motion.

You will be transferring your weight from the front foot to your front hand. Push off of your take off leg by bending your knee slightly and extending again. While transferring weight lift your trail leg into the air. Slightly bend your elbow and push off the ground to thrust your legs into the air. Be sure to keep those legs spread while entering into step 4.

Now, you are going to distribute weight between both arms by placing your back hand down and aligning your torso vertically. This motion should hoist your legs into the air. Remember to keep those legs spread! (further now than in previous steps). It is critical at this point to keep your body as straight as possible, similar to a split-legged hand stand.

While maintaining this over-your-body momentum shift you weight from your back hand to your front hand. Similar to step 3, you will want to slightly bend your elbow to absorb the pressure. At this point all of your weight is on your back hand. Continue to focus or spot the ground.

Step

With your back hand push off the ground with all your might and touch your back foot (trail leg) to the ground. Using momentum from the push of your back hand hoist your chest up and center all of your weight on the back foot relieving your back hand. Since your legs should still be spread apart, your front foot (take off leg) will be the next limb to touch the ground. Once you have planted both feet firmly on the ground and returned to the X position, you have landed a cartwheel successfully.
